Bangkok Dreaming

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

I just got back from a trip to Bangkok to meet up with Mama and visit Peew.

Img_1796_edited Peew lives in Naturalville, a serviced apartment in Langsuan (parang Rockwell, Thai style) that costs her company an arm and a leg (well, dapat lang—-they work their expats to the bone, so they do deserve these luxuries!). It just blew my mind how amazing her apartment is—it looks like a very well-kept three star hotel with all the amenities (with matching French restaurant sa lobby!)! Nakakaluha that the baby of the family is doing so  freaking damned well. These are the times I wished I wasn’t a starving doctor :)

Dscn5911 Anyway, Bangkok was amazing—you can just replace the signage with English , and you could have been in Manila.Shopping was, to put it mildly, a blast! Let’s just say that once I started, I couldn’t stop, and I don’t think I ever, in my entire life, bought 2 belts, two pairs of shorts, a pair of pants and 7 blouses in three short hours. Oh and 3 pairs of shoes in under 30 minutes. And dirt cheap REAL Lacoste shirts (sa Lacoste shop, ha, not sa Chatuchak). Well, ok the reason they were dirt cheap is that I fit into the kiddie sizes! Heehee! Amazing, right?!?!

Oh, and the food was terrific, I am a huge fan of their beef noodles and all the fruits you can buy sa tabi-tabing vendor.

Dscn5870 I am also so fascinated with their history and culture. I have never seen a people who loved their King so much! I mean, every other building has HUGE pictures of him and the QUEEN! I just remembered that they were the ONLY Asian country who was NEVER colonized! And even if their culture, art and religion is heavily influenced by Indonesia, China, India and other countries, when you step back, you can still say that everything is still so uniquely Thai!  It was just so frustrating that I couldn’t find a good history book of Thailand nor a biography of the King in English :(

Anyway, I obviously adore Bangkok. I will definitely return soon! This time with Sam. I need someone to lug my shopping bags, you know. :)
